Post Operative Pain Management for Individuals with OUD

Registration: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ISqTvimKQ0elMUfvzpZzeQ?emci=4ac9aad…

The first session in our three-part case series will feature a case illustrating a stepwise approach to supporting patients who have opioid use disorder (OUD) before and after surgery.

This case features a common scenario: a patient who is stable in their recovery who takes buprenorphine expresses multiple concerns about having surgery.  How can a provider prepare their patient who is concerned about being mistreated or having their pain mismanaged?  Or what can they do to allay fears that a surgery and opioids used to treat pain during or after surgery might pose a risk to their recovery? This case example will describe what medical providers can do to address these concerns and will review best practices for postoperative pain management based on the 2022 CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain. Participants will also receive guidance for how to counsel patients about what they should do prior to surgery, understand what evidence-based perioperative pain management practices are, and review non-pharmacological agents for multimodal postoperative pain management

Objectives:

1). Apply 2022 CDC Pain Guidelines to patients with different opioid tolerance.

2). Review pharmacologic and non-pharmacological approaches to treating acute and chronic pain.
