Withdrawal Management and Methadone Initiation in the Hospital Setting

As of 2024, hospital providers reported changes in the characteristics and severity of withdrawal symptoms attributed to the dynamic illicit drug supply. This has increased the urgency on identifying protocols that effectively manage pain and withdrawal in a hospital setting. Methadone is an evidence-based medication for treating withdrawal but remains underutilized in the hospital setting for several reasons, such as concerns about discharge strategy and misconceptions about titration, effect, and regulation.

Faculty will review the initiation and titration of methadone in hospital settings, as well as outline changes in withdrawal symptoms observed by local practitioners. Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion that will illustrate strategies for implementing best practices for treating withdrawal in the emergency department and inpatient settings, as well as how to leverage recent policy changes to improve transitioning patients initiated on methadone in the hospital to opioid treatment programs in their communities.
