Description

The continued presence of medetomidine in the drug supply has necessitated changes to withdrawal management for patients who have opioid use disorder across the healthcare continuum.  Patients seeking to start medications for opioid use disorder or who are returning to outpatient settings from inpatient care for opioid and medetomidine withdrawal need continued follow up to safely taper medications.

This case-based panel discussion will explore the current understanding of treating medetomidine withdrawal in outpatient settings and discuss how to troubleshoot what to do for vital sign abnormalities, medication management if a patient returns to use and how to support patients who require hospital admission

Objectives:

  1.  Describe medication management of patients transitioning from inpatient settings who require tapering of medications used to treat medetomidine withdrawal.
  2. Describe the clinical factors and considerations in managing medetomidine withdrawal in outpatient settings.
