In this presentation, Rose Laurano, MPH, Harm Reduction Manager with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's Division of Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction, explores how stigma impacts individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and the healthcare systems that serve them. Participants will learn about the role of social, internalized, and structural stigma, the importance of person-first language, and practical strategies for fostering more compassionate and effective care. The session also highlights the evidence supporting medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), addresses common misconceptions about treatment, and provides tools for healthcare professionals to champion recovery-oriented, stigma-free practices within their organizations.
