Case Review: Community Psychiatry Residency Training with Patients in Alternative Settings
About this event:
Most medical residents, regardless of specialty, spend most or all of their intensive training in traditional medical settings--hospitals and clinics--that are not optimized to provide high-quality care to marginalized and vulnerable populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness. This case will describe a patient seen in the context of a psychiatry residency rotation specifically designed to literally "meet the patient where they're at," and will explore the benefits (to patients, to trainees, and to systems) of incorporating more community-based work into medical training programs.
- Led by Dr. David Beckmann, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Learning Objective: Describe a case that illustrates how giving residents experience of providing care to patients with substance use disorders outside of traditional treatment settings benefits learners, patients, and communities.
